SSE Heritage’s ‘Power from the Glens’ art exhibition was recently displayed at Eden Court, Inverness from Monday 2nd September to Thursday 26th September 2024.
The exhibition was created to mark the 80th anniversary of the 1943 Hydro Electric Development (Scotland) Act and is a remarkable showcase of original drawings and designs from SSE’s earliest hydro schemes in the north of Scotland.
Curated by Gillian O'Reilly and Holly Cammidge, with accompanying texts by Dr. Alistair Fair, Reader in Architectural History at the University of Edinburgh, the exhibition features the original design drawings of renowned architects such as James Shearer, Thomas Gratton, Peter McLean, Robert Hurd, Robert Matthew, F.A. Wemyss, and H.O. Tarbolton.
Complementing these are the works of celebrated artists Robert Eadie and William Douglas Macleod, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic and engineering vision that shaped Scotland’s energy landscape.
This exhibition offers a unique insight into the creative and technical processes behind one of Scotland’s most transformative engineering feats. It highlights the foresight and innovation of the early architects and engineers whose work continues to power Scotland’s communities sustainably.
